| The
Cumberland County Library’s Computer Training
Center (CTC) provides various different software
programs and Internet access to further our
mission of providing information and education
resources to our community.
Hours and Usage
- Hours are
posted on the CTC Schedule.
- Hours are
subject to change.
- The CTC is
ONLY to be used for software-specific work
that is unavailable on the Public Computers
in the Reference Area or for training
purposes.
- General
Internet Surfing not permitted unless the
Public Computers in the Reference Area are
full and the CTC is open or if assisted by a
Reference Librarian.
- A list of
software descriptions is available with the
CTC Operator.
Signing In at the
Computer Training Center
- Users must
sign in with the CTC Operator in order to
use the computers in the CTC.
- Users must
print their first and last names legibly,
write their signature, and record their
library card number on the sign-in sheet.
- Users must
state their purpose when signing in.
- Users are not
allowed to sign in for others.
- The CTC
Operator must sign his/her name to validate
the sign-in process.
- Users are
stating that they will abide by the Terms of
Service when signed in.
Rules and
Security
- Do not attempt
to run your own software, customize files,
or change configurations on the computers.
- Do not turn on
or off the computer or reboot the system.
Ask a library staff member for assistance if
there is a problem.
- When finished,
please close the application(s) you have
used and return to the Windows 98 desktop
screen.
- Deliberate
altering of any files or modifying the
configuration of any PC or peripheral is
considered a violation of computer system
security and will result in the loss of
library computer privileges, with possible
legal ramifications.
- Destruction or
damage of equipment due to willful misuse
will result in legal action.
- Children are
not allowed in the Computer Training Center.
- Do not touch
the monitor screens.
Rules Concerning
Saving and Floppy Disks
- Users are
permitted to bring their own personal
computer discs for saving data from a
software program or downloading information
from the Internet onto drive "A."
- All disks are
automatically scanned for viruses upon
access.
- 3.5"
Floppy Discs are supported in the Computer
Training Center and are available for
purchase for $1 each. (NOTE: 5¼"
discs, ZIP disks, and LS SuperDisks are not
supported)
- Users may also
save to a temporary network drive, known as
drive "F." Files saved in this
location are not secure, meaning that any
user may have access to the file, and these
files are deleted regularly.
- The Library
assumes no responsibility for damage to your
personal system resulting from any files
downloaded and/or from any discs purchased
or used at the Cumberland County Library.
Inappropriate Use
- Display of
sexually explicit graphics is strictly
prohibited.
- Display or
transmission of profane, abusive, or
threatening language is prohibited.
- Use of
informal conversations, such as chat,
is prohibited.
- Violating any
local, state, or federal statute is
prohibited.
- Loud and
boisterous behavior is prohibited.
- Sound is only
permitted for training purposes; music or
any other informal sound broadcasts are
prohibited unless the user supplies his/her
own headphones and does not disturb others.
Time Limits
- There is a one
(1) hour limit when others are waiting.
- There is a two
(2) hour limit per day per person unless
permission is granted from the Lab Operator
with specific reason.
Printing
- Printing has a
charge of fifteen (15) cents per page.
- Printing MUST
be retrieved from the printer by the CTC
Operator. You may not retrieve your own
printing.
- Printing must
be paid for within the CTC before you leave.
- You are
responsible for any mistakes.
- Any unpaid
printing charges will be placed on the
user’s library card.
Internet Usage
and Disclaimer
The Internet
contains many different kinds of materials, some
of which may be of a controversial or an
offensive nature. In offering Internet access,
the library staff cannot control or assume
responsibility for:
- Access points
reached
- The content of
interactive communications such as e-mail
and newsgroups
- The validity
of information
- Accessibility
due to technical difficulties or Internet
reliability.
Parents must
assume responsibility for their children’s use
of the Internet and the Cumberland County
Library Local Area Network. Parents are required
to watch their children as they use the
resources in the Computer Training Center. A
software program entitled Internet Safety
is available for use and free copies of Child
Safety on the Information Highway are
available at the library.
E-Mail Usage
- The library
does not provide e-mail accounts.
- The library
does not provide use of e-mail programs.
(i.e. Messenger, Outlook, etc.)
- Web-based
e-mail accounts may be used, if necessary.
The CCL Library, however, assumes no
responsibility for the content,
availability, or reliability of such
programs.
Staff Assistance
- The Computer
Training Center Operator is only available
for general questions as time and knowledge
permit. The CTC Operator is NOT available
for private tutoring sessions and will not
complete any work for the user.
- Circulation,
Reference Books, and self-instruction
software are available.
- Schedules of
classes on various topics are offered
periodically. Please see the CTC Operator to
register.
Class Rules
- Class
Schedules are available at the library or on
the library website.
- Students must
pre-register and pay the registration fee
(if applicable) for all classes.
- Students must
meet any pre-requisites before taking a
class as listed in the course descriptions.
- Students must
sign in on the class roster before starting
class.
- Printing
assigned during a class will be free of
charge. However, extra copies or unnecessary
printing will carry the normal charge of
fifteen cents per page.
- Please listen
to the instructor and be courteous to the
fellow students in the class.
- Do only what
the instructor says, unless permission is
granted to do otherwise.
- Please ask
questions to the instructor during class,
but hold off any specific or personal
questions to the end of class.
- Note that
classes offered at the Computer Training
Center are for self-development purposes
only; instructors are not certified and
course hours are not accredited.
- Same rules
apply as stated in this Terms of Service.
Any
user violating any usage guideline(s) will be
asked to stop. If the violation continues, the
user will forfeit the privilege to use the
computers at the Cumberland County Library.
